I could not work a dog under such strict regimen- even ones where ownership goes to the client that can be revoked.
To have to do medically what the program wants is enough to make me flee- ie vaccines and sitting to wait on their decisions about medical care- I just could not do it. Can you imagine how bad Thane could ahve got with Lyme if I did that? I mean he already collapsed on the way home on the 7th.
Then when it comes to retirement-ughhhh
Once I got the taste of training success though, I could not have gone to a program. You could say I was bitten by the owner training bug- something a program told me I would never succeed at. smileKaryn and Thanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07324264399574186985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277346071589276562.post-83892914528062496612011-07-14T22:16:00.596-07:002011-07-14T22:16:00.596-07:00This was a really brave post!

Or that they pay for any of the dog's expenses!

When I applied to the ONE SD program in the country I thought might accept me, it was $20,000 I'd have to raise for the dog! I didn't find any programs that cost less than $5000, and that was over 10 years ago; I assume costs have gone up. (The program denied my application.) Those of us who are "too disabled" or don't have the "right" disabilities, of course, have the choice of no SD or we train them ourselves.

The amount of money I've had to spend on each SD has increased each time, and is huge, partly because I've become more aware of preventive health issues. I'm shocked. I had no idea there was such disparity in the AD community.

OTOH, hearing from friends with program dogs (GDs and SDs, both), about the program's rules and requirements for the entire working life of the dog, has made me grateful I don't have to deal with that.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
